Fuseboard Upgrade / Replacement

If you have an old consumer unit like the one on the right, which still uses fuses, you might be considering upgrading it to a newer, more safe and efficient version.

A fuseboard, also known as a fuse box, consumer unit or distribution board, is a hub for all of the electrical cables in your home. It protects you and other members of your household from electric shocks as well as protecting your electrical appliances from damage. For this reason, it’s really important that your consumer unit is up to date with the latest standards.

If your fuses keep blowing or the electricity supply keeps tripping, it might be a good idea to invest in a new consumer unit. If you’re looking to add a new electric shower, oven or other high amp appliance, then you might need extra spaces on your board, so upgrading to a bigger board or installing a extra fuse board would be a good idea.

Reasons Why You Might Need To Upgrade Your Distribution Board

  • If your electricity supply keeps tripping, has signs of burning or burnt wires or smells funny - this is an electrical emergency and you should contact us immediately.

  • You are installing a new electric shower, oven or another high-amp device and don’t have enough space on your current distribution board

  • Your home has an old style fuse box not up to current standards

  • You are concerned that your consumer unit is unsafe

  • You are building a shed, garage or other outbuilding and need a power supply outdoors

  • You are adding an extension onto your home

  • You are installing a new EV (electric vehicle) charging point

  • You are considering installing smart home upgrades

How To Test The RCDs/RCBOs In Your Consumer Unit

Every 6 months, you should test your RCDs or RCBOs within your consumer unit to make sure everything is still functioning properly. To do this, flip up the cover and look for a button marked “test” or “t”.

The trip switch should go down and turn off when you press this button to turn off the power to your home.

You can then reset the supply by pressing it upwards.

If the power does not switch off when the button is pressed, then contact us immediately to come and investigate the issue.

Consumer Unit Replacement Reviews

  • Elser fitted a new fuse box to our house and during initial testing uncovered a fault in the wiring behind one of the walls. The fault was rectified and the overall installation is very neat and tidy. They will be my first call for future projects and I would certainly recommend them.

  • Mati is very friendly and professional in his work. He fitted an electricity meter for us and explained everything that we needed to know about it. He was on time and his pricing is very fair. We have booked him again for later this month to fit three lights for us.
